Hobart Tourism embarked on an innovative journey to redefine the essence of physical Tourist Information Centres amidst the shifting paradigms of travel and exploration. The initiative engaged a synergistic collaboration of diverse industry and community stakeholders in a Design Sprint, fostering a realm where creativity and strategy flourished. Here, the integration of cyber-physical products and services became the cornerstone of transformation.

Essential methodologies such as empathy mapping and user experience were amalgamated with rapid ideation processes, crafting a visionary approach to information delivery. This strategy focused on enriching both visitor and local resident experiences, unveiling a multifaceted spectrum of attractions and revenue models, thus forging a future where information centres resonate with vibrancy, relevance, and innovation.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The way travellers plan and explore travel destinations is ever-changing. The role of physical Tourist Information Centres and their services is being pulled into question. Hobart Tourism wanted to explore new products, services and experiences which could be delivered in the future, taking a more blended ‘cyber-physical’ approach.

OUR APPROACH

We designed and facilitated an interactive and engaging Design Sprint for a diverse group of staff, industry and community stakeholders to generate ideas for a radically different approach to tourist information delivery, then supported them to develop simple paper-based prototypes and run some quick and safe tests.

The Results —

Skill Development

The team learned the skills of Empathy mapping, User Experience mapping, rapid ideation and creativity techniques, prototyping, experimentation and testing.

Mindset Transformation

Adoption of an more outward looking perspective and cultivation of a growth-minded approach.

Enhanced User Experience

The concepts developed, centred around Visitor as well as Local resident experiences, utilising a blend of physical interactions and amazing digital experiences to not only inform but entertain.

Revenue Optimisation

The solutions developed visitor attractions, as well as information provision and offered several additional revenue sources and models.
