Breaking the Culture of ‘Busyness

Monash University Research Platforms

Monash Research Platforms stands as a beacon of excellence, providing researchers with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. However, the leadership team of 60+ face the challenge of balancing the demands of the work with maintaining a positive culture – a crucial element for high performance.

Thanks to an invite from the Pro Vice-Chancellor, we spent a transformative day at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), exploring how culture fuels high-flying teams.

The day was packed with lightbulb moments:

  • We unpacked outdated Industrial Revolution work systems.

  • We tackled the 'Busyness Trap' head-on, understanding it’s toxic grip on our culture.

  • We brainstormed on creating teams that thrive on honesty, trust, safety, and mutual accountability.

  • Our group of leaders also pinpointed systemic snags in their workforce strategy and explored opportunities for profound impact.

OUR APPROACH

Through interactive discussions and activities we ignited ideas for moving from mere busyness to true effectiveness, challenging each other on how we delegate, prioritise, and innovate. Together, we faced the reality of our fast-paced, ever-evolving work life. Instead of fearing the constant shifts, we embraced them as opportunities to stretch, grow, and adapt. We pondered the beauty of not clinging too tightly to outcomes, which frees us to pivot and realign with agility.

This exploration was more than a workshop; it was a call to action. It was about breaking free from the status quo and inviting a culture where change is not just accepted but celebrated, fuelling our collective journey towards growth and effectiveness.

Professor Jacek Jasieniak

“The nature of the discussions and the tone of the day was very positive. Neu21's approach was very effective in driving these outcomes.”
